Influenced by Inuit soapstone carvings as well as local gravestones from the 1700's, Donald Saaf has been exploring the sculputural properties of soapstone. In this introductory course, participants will learn the basic approach and philosophy of working with this local, beautiful and pliable stone. Participants should bring imagery of their own choice, as well as any hand tools you’d like to work with including, hammer and chisel, rasps and saws. Stone and some tools will be provided.

Donald Saaf is a painter, sculpter, musician, and children’s book illustrator. He lives in Saxton’s River, Vermont with his wife Julia Zanes and their two boys Isak and Olaf.
