GREAT RIVER ARTS ANNOUNCES OCTOBER WORKSHOPS
Bellows Falls, Vt. – The Great River Arts Institute announces that it will be offering three workshops during the month of October.
Paul Bowen, a Welsh-born artist living in Williamsville will be leading a workshop entitled Connecting with Wood. Participants in this two day-workshop, which will take place on October 13 and 14, will learn to build structures ranging from the miniature to monolithic by using scrap wood with simple and safe techniques. Whether with electric or hand-tools or in an abstract or figurative manner, students will explore a range of possibilities of sculpture in wood construction. There will be time for demonstrations and discussion about the issues of sculpture in our time. Tools and materials will be supplied but may be augmented by the student if they wish. The cost of the two-day workshop is $300.
On October 19 – 21, Dan Carr and Julia Ferrari of Golgonooza Press will return to Great River Arts to lead their popular workshop on using the letterpress. This workshop is a unique opportunity to work alongside them to understand how to set a broadside (a poem or brief passage) in letterpress, how to print the piece, and to understand the design criteria in realizing a finished, aesthetically pleasing piece. The cost of the three-day workshop is $400.
On October 28 – 30, Jen Bradley will lead a workshop entitled Exploring Encaustics.
This workshop offers an introduction to encaustic painting. Originating in Egypt during the Roman era, encaustic is one of the oldest painting methods. Students will learn how to make hand-made gesso for this process. The workshop will cover the basic principles of painting with beeswax as well as safety tips. Due to the range of possibilities offered by this medium, participants will also explore various experimental techniques and ways of application. Students will gain a firm grounding in the encaustic painting process.
The cost of this three-day workshop is $450.
