Revision and The Writer's Process: Advanced Fiction Weekend Workshop – Pam Mandell

November 7 - 8, 2009
Tuition: $300
Application Form

This weekend workshop is designed for those students who have a familiarity with basic writing techniques, such as characterization, structure and dialogue. The focus of the class will be revision and the nature of and approach to creating revised drafts.  We will examine some of the concerns of revision: how does the writer select and deselect material, how does she/he know when to summarize lengthy material, or create scenes where the narrative is too condensed or brief? How can the writer achieve greater narrative distance when the material feels “too close”?

Students will be asked to send up to 25 pages of a work-in-progress—a story, a novel or memoir chapter—that they are interested in revising. In addition, reading and writing assignments will be sent out to students prior to the workshop. Participants should come prepared to participate in discussions and in-class writing exercises.
