Summer Arts Camp 2008
Great River Arts will once again be offering a two-week summer camp in the arts. The camp will be offered for students entering kindergarten through 12th grade and will run from July 21st to August 1st with a combination of one-week and two-week classes. Camp hours are from 9:00 am until noon and selections include Clay Studio, Jewelry-making, Drawing, Pottery, Photography, Pinhole Cameras and Installation Art. Camp locations are the North Walpole Elementary School, the Fall Mountain Regional High School and Great River Arts. The camp cost is $65 per week. Experimental and fun! Learn to create sculptures using stone, wood, wire, found objects and cast clay. Donald Saaf lives in Vermont with his wife, artist Julia Zanes, and their two boys, Isak and Olaf. He is a graduate of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and is a painter, sculptor, musician and children's book illustrator. He has illustrated many children's books, including Pushkin Meets the Bundle, Train Song, and Elemenopeo. Musical Easels with Ann Thomson Explore the concepts of cubism and perspective with this playful, painting workshop. Students will paint moving from easel to easel each time the music starts and continue painting the same subject from a different perspective. This exploratory and physical workshop will be loads of Ann Thompson graduated with honors from Indiana University with a BFA in Painting/Design and an Art History Minor in 2006. She worked for Several years at Indiana University's SoFA Gallery and was able to TA an Advanced painting course on contemporary themes in the field. Since returning to her native NH, she has been the Public Relations Director for Spheris Gallery in Hanover, NH . Drawing the Sound with Jonathan Ryan Storm This unusual class will be part adventure, part drawing class! Practice your drawing skills from the unusual perspective of drawing what you hear - students will spend the week drawing from music, conversations, and going around Bellows Falls and drawing what they hear. This is an opportunity to tune into the world that may change the way you hear and see! Jonathan is an artist and illustrator. Originally from Texas Jonathan came to Vermont to help a friend build his house. He recently returned from a week - long residency at Islands Fold in British Columbia. jonathanryanstorm.blogspot.com This Is What I Mean: Telling Stories with Paint and Words with Ernie Perry** "This Is What I Mean" is an exploration of how written language can be used not only to accompany a piece of visual art, but also how it can exist within a piece of art as a viable component of the artwork. Drawings and paintings will be created where the written word is actually a part of the picture. The creative process for drawing and painting and how it relates to the writing process will be examined while working with drawing and painting techniques in a group studio setting. Ernie Perry lives in Marlow, NH and has been teaching in Walpole, NH for 8 years. He graduated from Plymouth State with a BS in Art Education and a concentration in drawing. Ernie draws, paints, sculpts, prints, sews, and makes armor in his home studio. ** Special Tuition Rate for students from Fall Mountain Regional District*** Thanks to funding from the Francis R. Dewing Foundation and the New Hampshire Arts Council, FMR students pay only $30. Magical Marionettes with Julia Zanes Create animal marionettes (real and imagined). Learn to sew the body, make a paper mache head, and add wings/legs embellish with recycled materials, string it up and make it come to life! Julia Zanes works as a painter showing her work throughout New England. She also teaches workshops for children and adults in various painting and art making techniques. Along with her husband, children, and friends she has been making an annual puppet show and creating a variety of two and three-dimensional puppets. Drawing and Watercolor with Suzanne Farrell This class will feature a variety of watercolor and drawing techniques. Projects include, but are not limited to portraits, landscape, collage, and still life. Students will be exposed to an array of artists and their artwork. In addition, different styles of production such as abstraction and realism will be investigated. Be ready to take risks, create and explore! Local educator, Suzanne Farrell earned a Bachelor’s degree in visual arts with a concentration in drawing and painting at the State University of New York at New Paltz. Jewelry Making with Beads with Janna Crafts Students will learn how to use pliers, cutters and hammers as well as how to make their own fimo beads. They will use beading techniques to create earrings, bracelets, necklaces and anklets. Boys and Girls are encouraged to attend. Janna Crafts has a B.S. in art and education from Vermont College. She teaches art at the Academy School in West Brattleboro, Vermont. She began working as a silversmith in 1976. Her artistic endeavors include collage and book arts. Preschool Art Adventure with Neomi Hennessey Look, touch, and discover the world through art. Explore various media; learn new techniques that can be repeated at home! Children must be four by class date and be able to participate without a parent/ guardian present. Enrollment is limited to 8 campers. Neomi has been involved in the arts her entire life. Her family is all artists, and she spent her childhood working with many different materials. Neomi is currently attending Johnson State College working towards a B.A. in Studio Art with K-12 licensure. Campers will create a summer album/journal to record all their exciting adventures! We will sew signatures, create fabric/board covers, and colorful paste papers ;on-the-spot mini books will fill gaps while paste is drying. I have been creating since I was a toddler. I am endlessly curious about new processes and techniques, and enjoyed exploring with my own kids, who continue to create art (and sell it) as adults. Providing children with raw materials, ideas and the space for creative outlet allows me to celebrate their creative curiosity while indulging my own. I am a carver of wood and bone; work in many styles with paper and fabric, stone, found objects, music and the written word; in the kitchen and out in the woods and fields.
Session II: July 28 - August 1 Wire Jewelry with Dawn Russell Working with brass and copper wire and sculpt various shapes with the pliers and fingers and finish them with the hammers and files. Color could be added with beads and we could incorporate fabric and leather. Dawn began making jewelry as gifts for her family. This evolved into apprenticing with a traditional goldsmith while fueling the design through interdisciplinary studies in art and anthropology at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA. After Evergreen Dawn completed a graduate program that specialized in contemporary metalsmithing (SUNY, New Paltz). Pinhole Photography with Alexis Doshas This workshop will include the history and explanation of the pinhole photographic process, instruction and creation of the pinhole cameras, shooting, exposures, composition, loading and unloading of camera with photographic medium (paper) developing of paper negatives, printing images in darkroom with enlarger and hands on instruction the students will experience the entire process of image making from the construction of the camera itself through the shooting and magic of the development process, into the technicality of the printing process, culminating in a final photographic image entirely self-created and comprehended. www.lexbealadoshas.com Alexis Doshas received her BFA with a concentration in Photography from Massachusetts College of Art in 1999. She has since worked with artists and arts organizations in Portland, Oregon, Vermont, and Cape Cod, MA. She has shown nationally and locally, and been the recipient of several awards and residencies. The latest of which was 1 - month stay at the Vermont Studio Center. Each camper will peel the bark and whittle patterns in their own walking stick. I have been creating since I was a toddler. Providing children with raw materials, ideas and the space for creative outlet allows me to celebrate their creative curiosity while indulging my own. In this course you will learn the basic principles of storytelling and how to apply them to your own comics. If you love comics and have a story to tell, this course is for you. Students will learn to make comics using real comic artist tools. Megan Baehr is a recent graduate of the School of Visual Arts in NYC with a BFA in Cartooning and illustration .“ I love working with young people and I would love to pass on my knowledge and love of comics to them”.
